Military Service Notes

  • United States Army. "This esteemed gentleman proudly served his country during World War II as an infantry staff sergeant in the United States Army, including fighting in the Battle of the Bulge; he demonstrated immense fortitude and perseverance while surviving as a prisoner of war in Germany, for which he was awarded the prestigious Purple Heart." 77th Legislature, R.S., HR 822. Resolutions - Memorial.
  • United States Army, Staff Sergeant, World War II. He withdrew from college in 1943 to enter the U.S. Army. While in the Army, he served as an infantry staff sergeant. Stationed in Europe, Spilman and his unit were overrun by Germans in the Battle of the Bulge. In the cold and foggy Ardennes Forest, Spilman was taken captive and held in a prisoner of war camp, where he survived several months of starvation and a serious illness." Footstone inscription, "S SGT US Army, World War II, Purple Heart and OLC, Prisoner of War." Texas State Cemetery.
