  • Cherokee War (1839); captain of a militia company in Nacogdoches; and Postmaster General of the Confederacy, captured May 1865 and confined in Fort Warren in Boston harbor. Handbook of Texas Online.
  • Biographical sketch, p. 25. "He was in the two battles against the Indians in July 1839, and for his gallantry Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston, the Secretary of War of the young republic tendered him a commission as lieutenant in the regular army which he declined . . . In March 1861 President Jefferson Davis called him to his cabinet as Postmaster-General, and during the last few months of the Confederate government he was also Secretary of the Treasury.
