- Conduct active oversight of the agencies under the committee's jurisdiction.
- Actively monitor implementation of the STAR-Plus Medicaid managed care project for long-term care in Harris County. This is a national pilot project and many constituencies will be interested in its deployment and results.
- Study the opportunities and problems associated with use of an index to measure quality of long-term care in Medicaid-certified nursing homes.
- Actively monitor the implementation of state and federal welfare reforms. Conduct a comprehensive review of the Texas Workforce Commission, including its organization, rules, plans, and spending. Establish specific goals for welfare reform and assess problems and opportunities for the attainment of those goals. (Joint with House Committees on Economic Development and Appropriations; coordinate with the Workforce Development Legislative Oversight Committee)
