The town of Springfield was the first county seat of Limestone County when it was established in 1847. The town began to decline when it was bypassed by the railroad, and after the courthouse burned down in 1873, the county seat moved to Groesbeck. When the former townsite became part of Fort Parker State Park in the mid-1930s, only the cemetery remained.
