(1) "Resigns as a Legislator: J.R. Elliott Becomes Chief Clerk of State Department," 3/14/1911, p. 4. "Representative J.R. Elliott of Sherman, Grayson County, has tendered his resignation as a member of the Legislature and will today assume his duties as chief clerk in the Department of State." Austin Statesman.
(2) Appointed chief clerk to the secretary of state by Governor-elect Colquitt; Elliott accepted and "would resign his seat in the house about the time of Mr. Colquitt's inauguration, "May Retain Seat," 1/12/1911, p. 1. Galveston Daily News.
