HBA-ATS, KMH H.B. 1350 76(R)BILL ANALYSIS Office of House Bill AnalysisH.B. 1350 By: Solis, Jim Judicial Affairs 6/3/1999 Enrolled BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Prior to the 76th Legislature, state law limited the amount in controversy in a Cameron County Court at Law to no more than $100,000. Expanding the amount would have allowed cases that would normally have been filed in the local district court to be filed in the county court at law, thus diminishing the caseload of the district court. H.B. 1350 increases the amount in controversy in a county court at law in Cameron County to a figure not to exceed $1 million. RULEMAKING AUTHORITY It is the opinion of the Office of House Bill Analysis that this bill does not expressly delegate any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, department, agency, or institution. SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS SECTION 1. Amends Section 25.0332(a), Government Code, by increasing the allowed amount in controversy in a county court at law in Cameron County to $1 million, rather than $100,000, excluding interest. SECTION 2. Effective date: September 1, 1999. SECTION 3. Emergency clause.
